Standing seam vs corrugated: the four metal roof types compared

Panel type is the biggest single lever on a metal roof quote, and the four common families are genuinely different products, not finishes on the same thing.
The four families
- Exposed-fastener corrugated or ribbed steel
- Screwed through the face into the deck or purlins, with a neoprene washer under every screw head. The cheapest metal roof by a wide margin, quick to install, and the reason metal roofing has a reputation for leaking: the washers are the weak point and need inspecting and eventually replacing. Excellent value on outbuildings, barns, workshops and simple gable homes.
- Standing seam
- Panels with raised vertical seams, fastened with hidden clips that let the panel expand and contract. No penetrations through the face, so no washers to fail, and the reason it is the premium residential system. It costs more in both material and skilled labor, and on-site roll forming is common on larger jobs.
- Metal shingles or tile panels
- Pressed panels that imitate shake, slate or tile, installed in courses with concealed fasteners. Sits between corrugated and standing seam on cost, and is often the answer where an HOA or a historic district objects to a modern panel profile.
- Stone-coated steel
- Steel panels with a bonded stone granule surface, so it reads as tile or shake from the street while behaving like metal. Popular where a tile look is wanted without tile weight, and in high-wind and hail exposed markets.
Beyond the profile: what else moves the price
- Gauge. Steel thickness is quoted as a gauge number, and lower numbers are thicker. 24 gauge is thicker and stiffer than 26 gauge, resists oil canning and denting better, and costs more. Ask which gauge is quoted, because it is a quiet way to cut a bid.
- Substrate. Galvanized steel, Galvalume, aluminum, zinc and copper are increasingly expensive in that rough order. Aluminum is the usual choice in coastal salt exposure.
- Coating. Paint systems differ in fade and chalk warranty. Ask for the coating system by name and for the finish warranty document.
- Panel width and seam height. Narrower panels mean more seams, more clips and more labor per square. Taller seams perform better on low slopes.
- Roof complexity. Every hip, valley, dormer, chimney and skylight is cut panel plus custom flashing. Complexity punishes standing seam labor harder than it punishes shingles.

Choosing without regret
- Match the system to the roof, not the budget. A low-slope roof or one with heavy snow load narrows the sensible options before price gets a vote.
- Ask how many of this exact system the crew has installed. Standing seam rewards experience more than almost any other roofing work.
- Get gauge, substrate and coating in writing. These are the specifications that quietly separate two quotes for 'a standing seam roof'.
- Ask to see a roof they finished five years ago. Metal roofing photographs beautifully on day one.
